Achtung, Achtung!
The Great War is over, but Germany's struggles are far from finished. They have lost the war, and with an economic depression running rampant and extremism on the rise, the Germans need a sense of reflection and escapism. This was the birth of German expressionism.
Originally an art movement popularised by the likes of Otto Dix, it moves away from beautiful realism and instead focuses on sharp abstracts reflective of one's own emotions and trauma from war. Grief, betrayal, madness, decay are embodied amongst every wall and every shadow.
This movement created the first horror films the world had ever seen, alongside many staple creations in film history such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Metropolis, Nosferatu and M whom have continued to influence and inspire media and culture to this day
